MS 113 students:
Here is the ISBN for the textbook we will be using this semester in Trig. You can look it up on any textbook website, the JSU bookstore, or if you have a friend that might have the book. We are using the 10th edition Analytic Trigonometry. ISBN: 10th. ed. 978-0470-28076-8. Let me know if you have any problems. We will begin the first day back so I suggest you get this as soon as possible to avoid getting behind.

Algebra II Exploring the Titanic Activity

This is a very interesting activity. It allows you to explore the Titanic and the people that survived and died while on the Titanic.  It will also incorporate some mathematical knowledge because you will have to create some graphs about the information you have found.  DO NOT COMPLAIN to the sub about this activity and if you have any questions you can comment on the blog and I will check it often to help.  Everything is pretty self explanatory and you guys are intelligent people so I KNOW you will do well.  You are working with a partner and you will be presenting this on the Monday I return to school so take it seriously.  Have fun!!

Here's the link to the papers you already have in hand but this will help because of the links.

New MS 112 and MS 113 Books for JSU

Any Junior or Senior taking MS 112/PreCalculus and MS 113/Trigonometry whether you are taking these classes for dual enrollment or not, you must purchase the new book.  The ISBNs are listed below and I suggest you get these books as soon as possible so you will not be behind when school starts.

MS 112 ISBN 9781111622633
This is a loose leaf book.  Here is the list of the book from JSU.  This tells the ISBN, author, and edition.  You can buy this on campus at JSU.

Here is a link to a new graphing calculator that has a ton of new features that we will be using in all the math classes this year.  If you have not purchased a graphing calculator this is a great one to consider.  Here is a link about the calculator and the price.  You can buy this calculator for about $100 which is a great cost.  It is called the Casio fx-CG10 PRIZM. http://www.eaieducation.com/Product/533700/Casio%C2%AE_PRIZM_FX-CG10.aspx

TIMES Activity

How many people must be in room before the probability that someone shares a birthday, ignoring the year and ignoring the leap years, becomes at least 50%?
This problem is known as the Birthday Paradox.
By Hand it's easier to compute the probability that there are no common birthdays.
1. Start by considering two students. There are 365 days the first student's birthday could land on and 364 days the second student's birthday could land on and not match the first student.
2. So the probability of no common birthday for 2 students is (365 x 364) / (365 x 365) = 0.99726. You could continue this process by adding students until you arrived at about a 50% chance of no common birthday which subtracted from one would mean there would be a 50% of having a common birthday.  This could be a tedious process so...
3. There are two ways to work this problem on the calculator....TABLE function and RECURSION function.
4. Now lets check this paradox on a few Major League Baseball rosters.  Did you find any matches?
http://mlb.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=atl
http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=tex
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=nyy
5. These are the 40-man rosters so what is the probability that there will be two people with the same birthday?

Geometry Webquests

Geometry students:  Here are links to a few Webquests that I think you would be interested in working on over the next week.  A Webquest is an assignment completed on the computer using the internet.  All Webquests give you directions, a task, resources, and how you will be graded.  Disregard the point values on these Webquests because ours will be a little different.  You are more than welcome to work on your own or with a partner.  You can choose one of the ones I chose or you can choose another one from the list that you think you will be interested in.  I suggest you take this work seriously because it will count towards your grade.
